Q: How much does it cost to play in Philly Sports Leagues?
A: The membership fee to register as one player is $48. To register a full team, with an unlimited roster it is $525. This fee covers the cost of field rentals, bases, trophies & prizes, supplementary insurance, social event specials and administrative conveniences, among other league expenses. The cost of uniforms is the responsibility of individual teams. Some teams elect to wear more basic shirts and others wear more elaborate uniforms. Umpire fees are $20 per team, per game. Expect to either bring a couple bucks to each game or collect ahead of the season for at least 7 regular season games. Some teams defray this cost by doing fundraisers throughout the year. The more you do, the less you pay! Most teams have bats to share or buy them collectively out of team funds. (Please check our league rules before purchasing bats for our league.) You are expected to provide your own playing glove and rubber soled cleats at all games.
Q: How long is the PSL playing season?
A: The regular season is 8-10 weeks, weather and permit obligations permitting.
Q: Where are the games played?
A: Games are played on Belmont Plateau fields in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. The Fields are located at Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive. There is public parking lots and street parking surrounding the 6 softball fields. See page for specific directions.
Q: When are the games?
A: Games are played on Saturdays with the earliest game starting at 10am and the latest starting at 5pm. There will be no games for Easter, Memorial Day and 4th of July weekends. Some games are subject to change based on weather, permit balckouts, etc.
Q: How many games do teams play each week?
A: Most Saturday’s teams will play one 75 minute game. Most teams will have at least one doubleheader during the season. Games are usually consecutive or with a break in between.
Q: Am I required to be at every game?
A: That is certainly ideal but not expected. People have major social events they are expected to attend; illness occurs; emergencies happen and we all make vacation plans. Players are expected to make a concerted effort to be at as many games as possible, regardless of time or location. Your team depends on you and if too many players do not show up, the team may be forced to forfeit the games to the opponent and pay fees. To accommodate busy schedules, you are allowed an open roster, meaning you make pick up players at ANY point during the regular season (even 5 minutes before game time!) to play in place of absent players.
Q: How do I know if games are cancelled due to inclement weather?
A: Official announcements are posted on the homepage of our website by 10:00 A.M. on days of questionable weather. Your manager/captain will also reach out to you to let you know if games are cancelled.
Q: Is this all softball and no socializing?
A: Absolutely not! PSL is a great way to meet people. There are many organized events throughout the year for you to attend. Individual teams also hold fundraisers and socials to help defray their playing costs and have some fun! Although there is no alcohol permitted on or near the playing fields, teams often head to a different sponsor bar of the week after games to hang out and socialize with other members of the league.
Q: I don’t want to play but I’d like to be involved with a team. Is that an option?
A: Yes, you can check-in with our league to be a rotating substitute for teams. This is a great option if you want to get involved but cannot committ to many games. Also, a great option if you're just looking for some networking!
Q: OK, I’m sold! I want to play! What do I do?
A: Register on our shopping cart as a team or an individual. Once you are paid, you will be sent an email with details on what to do next from info@phillysoftball.com. Any more questions? Send an e-mail to our recruiting representative at info@phillysoftball.com and we'll do our best to assist you!
